Hynds Group CEO, Andrew Moss and John Hynds were on hand February 3rd to congratulate the 2020 Manurewa High school recipients a Hynds Foundation Scholarship. Congratulations to John Chen and Durresameen Khan whose scholarships are for Bachelor of Engineering Degrees at the University of Auckland. The agreement signing was followed by an informal lunch with John and Durresameen’s parents, Leanne Gibson and Ambure Giborees (Manurewa Highschool Business Academy), Robyn Hynds (Hynds Foundation), Leonie Hynds (Founding Director), 2019 scholarship winner Tyler Ball, and other Hynds Senior Executives.
Hynds are pleased to announce Eucharist Ieremia is the recipient of the Hynds Foundation 2017 Scholarship for Academic and Cultural achievement.
Eucharist is a Year 13 student of Manurewa Highschool, and is enrolled at Auckland University to commence study in 2018 for a Bachelor in Engineering Degree.
The Hynds Foundation scholarship will assist him during his course of study, and we look forward to having Eucharist work at Hynds in the semester break before he commences his tertiary studies.
Hynds has assisted Oamaru in rolling out the red carpet for its population of little blue penguins. Hynds have donated a 25m, 450 diameter pipeline to create a tunnel that has become the country’s first wildlife underpass. As roading projects go, this one’s a little different. Construction was completed along Oamaru’s waterfront of a unique underpass, aimed at creating a safe passageway for the local blue penguins.
Oamaru’s blue penguins head out to sea before first light, returning ashore at dusk along the same route. “Well they’re pretty set in their ways; they’re pretty determined. So when they come ashore to a specific area, they’ll continue to do that,” says scientist Philippa Agnew. But their night time movements have become increasingly difficult, as the birds negotiate the busy road beside the blue penguin colony. “With that brings this conflict around particularly the traffic – people who are wanting to stop and see them, people who are wanting to actually leave the place, and they’ve all got to wait for the penguins,” says Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher.
One resident even acted as a “penguin crossing guard”, to try and keep the shy birds safe as visitors left the nightly viewings. But with the penguins refusing to change their course, the centre and council asked Hynds to help to build the wildlife underpass.
“How to get the penguins to their nests without that interference and potentially destruction from cars,” was the challenge says Ms Agnew. Power, water and other services were relocated, so the tunnel could be sited along the penguins’ usual route. The assistance from Hynds has gained national publicity with the project having publicity across all media channels.
The Harewood Road Underpass will officially open before Christmas, allowing for the first time the public to walk through the architecturally inspired subway, mimicking the ruggedness of the Southern Alps. 72 light shafts penetrate the culvert top slab allowing natural light to filter through below, cast from humble 525 concrete drainage pipe. Initially thrown in the too hard basket by Craig Cohen, the job was sent in the direction of the fresh Engineered Products Manager. Jasmax Architects designed the pipes to sit slightly skewed 15° North to maximise sunlight, this required one end of the pipe to be cast at 15° from vertical so that it lined up plumb with top of the culvert. The pipes had been designed design to connect to the culvert slab with 8 Canzac 16mm dowels.
Our methodology was to fabricate custom steel bands that were tacked onto the mould to create the angle and architectural finish desired, while also providing sufficient wall thickness for the dowels. A jig was made up to support the pipe at the required angle so the holes for the dowels could be drilled accurately after casting. The time and value added to our standard pipe resulted in considerable increased costs, strongly opposed to this the contractor brought a few test pipes to gauge whether using a concrete cutter was a valid option, but this was not accepted. The delivery programme was agreed upon and the order was placed with Hynds. A big effort from Americo dos Santos, Mike Ezernieks, Josh Siataga and Craig Cohen to get the job done!!!
Early Monday 14th November the upper South & lower North Islands were shaken by a massive 7.8 earthquake. Centred 60kms southwest of Kaikoura and 15kms northeast of Culverden, the Kaikoura and Hurunui Districts suffered the brunt of the quake, and the dawn revealed tremendous damage to property and land. Much of the below ground infrastructure was also shattered and the Kaikoura and Hurunui Districts, home to 2,000+ residents in Kaikoura and another 15,000+ residents in outlying districts, found themselves not only physically isolated but without functioning power, water supply, and sewage systems. Response teams were activated to support the community and to reinstate critical services, including water and sewage. Hynds reached out to those whom we know in the area to offer support, and prepared to boost stock of pipeline repair products in Christchurch.
The first request for pipeline repair product came in Monday evening but with regional roads severed, helicopter was the only quick option to get product to site. Hynds logistics immediately repurposed a truck and trailer for the task, obtaining a special permit to allow the driver to drive beyond normal time limits, and placed it at the disposal of the branch team. By Tuesday 3 pm a fully laden Hynds truck and trailer had arrived at the Cheviot Domain for air lift.
It was soon evident the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) were not going to be able to make the lifts before sundown, at which time all airlifts would halt. Sitting idle nearby was the Iroquois helicopter of Southern Heli Lift. After a conversation between Hynds, Southern Heli Lift (SHL), NZDF and the Earthquake Operations Centre (EOC), the decision was made by the EOC to direct SHL to lift the order into Kaikoura.
Meantime Hynds branches at Blenheim, Amberley and Christchurch were all fielding fresh orders culminating in a second very large order being delivered to the HMS Canterbury in Lyttelton Port to be carried by sea to Kaikoura. Other orders were delivered to the NZDF at Christchurch airport for air lift direct to Kaikoura. The commitment and expediency of our Christchurch delivery teams was outstanding!
A rural water scheme in Waiau (110kms of pipe) was discovered to be severely damaged and a call was made to relay the entire rising main in Polyethylene (PE). But the quantity and pressure rating of pipe required was outside the known capabilities of many of our suppliers. Waters and Farr stepped up, producing the 4,320 metres of 160od pipe in pressure ratings of 12.5bar through 20bar in 18 metres lengths, delivering the first of four truckloads within a day and the full quantity within five days. The 160od PN20 was a pipe Waters and Farr had not produced before, but were confident they could do so successfully, and urgently flew a critical component to Christchurch to enable them to do so. Waters and Farr repeated their performance a week later with the urgent preparation and despatch of 264 metres of 250od PE for Kaikoura wastewater repairs, and again when the team produced 5,000 metres of 90od pipe from scratch, delivering the first truckload to the Hurunui district within a day and completing the order
within four days. Waters and Farr have further assisted by making available a
spinning jenny to assist in the layout of over 6,000 metres of PE pipe supplied
Several of our suppliers have pulled out the stops to bring us the products called for. As have our own teams; Logistics, Order Management, Procurement, Branch Sales – all doing their bit (and more) to get things done. Delivery has become less problematic as the NZDF have established a centre of operations in Culverden to which materials may be consigned for forwarding on via army convoy through the inland road. Wastewater infrastructure remains heavily damaged and it is recommended that nothing yet be allowed to go down the drains. Investigations with CCTV are under way to establish the extent and prioritise repair. Hynds contribution in materials thus far measures in excess of 26,000 metres of pipe and 1,200 fittings delivered by Air, Sea and Land.
